A flat monthly ad budget wastes money in a lake town

Ads managed for a flat $150 a month, with spend weighted to the months people actually come.

Seasonal businesses need seasonal budgets

Here is the standard agency arrangement. You agree to a monthly retainer and a monthly ad budget, and both run at the same level for twelve months. Clean for the agency, easy to invoice, and for a Pottsboro business it quietly burns money.

The lake economy is not evenly distributed across the year. A meaningful share of the revenue arrives between spring and early fall. Spending the same amount in January that you spend in July means paying to reach people who are not planning a trip.

The fix is not complicated: flight the budget. Push hard in the run-up and through peak season, pull back in deep winter, and hold a modest presence during the planning window when people are booking summer ahead of time. Same annual spend, considerably more of it landing when someone is actually deciding.

The second thing worth saying plainly is that local targeting mostly does not work here. Pottsboro has roughly 2,400 residents. There is no ad budget small enough to make sense against an audience that size. Your customers are driving up from the metro or across from Oklahoma, so that is where the ads should point.

Our management fee stays flat at $150 whether your ad budget is $200 that month or $2,000. We are not paid a percentage, so a slow February costs us the same as a busy July and we have no reason to argue against pulling back.

Where the ads should point

Almost none of this is aimed at people inside the town limits, and that is deliberate.

DFW metro, planning window

The largest pool by far. People deciding weeks ahead where to spend a weekend.

Southern Oklahoma

Durant and the Oklahoma side of the lake are close and frequently ignored by businesses that only think about Texas.

Lake and boating search terms

High intent, moderate cost, and seasonal. Worth bidding hard in season and barely at all out of it.

Retargeting last season's visitors

Someone who looked in July and did not book is a strong audience the following spring. Cheap, and it compounds year over year.

What the $150 covers

Flat monthly management on top of your $49 website. Your ad budget is separate, paid straight to the platforms, and flexes with the season.

A budget calendar, not a flat monthly number

We map spend to your actual season, including the planning window when people book ahead. You approve the shape before anything runs.

Targeting aimed out of town

Metro and Oklahoma audiences rather than a radius around a town of 2,400. Landmark and lake terms rather than city name terms.

Tracking wired to your leads

Calls, forms, and booking enquiries tracked and landing in Core so you can see what a season actually produced.

Monthly report, plus an end-of-season read

The monthly numbers matter less here than the seasonal picture. We do both.

Digital Marketing in Pottsboro: common questions

Should I just pause ads over the winter?

Often yes, at least in deep winter. The exception is the planning window. People book summer trips in late winter, so going completely dark in January and February can mean missing bookings that were decided months before the season. We would usually recommend a small presence then rather than nothing.

Does the $150 change if my ad budget goes up in the summer?

No. It is a flat management fee regardless of what you spend. That is deliberate. Percentage-of-spend pricing gives an agency a reason to push your budget up in a good month and no reason to pull it back in a bad one.

Should I advertise to people in Pottsboro at all?

Rarely, unless you sell something residents need year round like a trade or home service. For anything lake-facing, an audience of 2,400 is not worth building a campaign around. Point the money at the metro.

I already list on Airbnb and VRBO. Why pay for ads?

Those platforms take a percentage and own the guest relationship. A direct booking is worth more per stay and gives you someone you can reach again next season. Ads pointed at your own site are how you build a list the platforms cannot take from you.

How small can the ad budget be and still work?

Smaller than in most markets, because you are not bidding against many competitors on lake terms. We would rather start modestly during a shoulder month, see what a click actually costs you, and set the season's budget from real numbers instead of a guess.
